“If you want to stay healthy, you should adapt to organic foods” said a Physician who has been my ardent well-wisher who constantly follows my food blog and my regular outside food binge. Although I have heard of Organic foods before and even stepped into a store close by, I never really understood the fad about it. I know of quite a few family and friends who swear by only organic foods in order to adapt to healthy lifestyle. On the flip side I always questioned the authenticity of these organic brands.
All my apprehensions about Organic food were put to rest over a tete-a-tete with Mr N Balasubramanian, CEO – 24 Mantra Organic who was more than happy to share insights about the whole organic food category. With a Philosophy to make a difference and grow food which is free from chemicals and pesticides, 24 Mantra Organic was conceptualized in 1992. “Going organic and growing organic is not easy” says Bala, as he is fondly known. For a farm to become organic it requires 3 to 4 years where the farm has to be literally purified with any sort of chemical or fertilizer contamination – a process that demands diligence, patience and attention to every detail possible which 24 mantra have inherited in their philosophy. Right land, right soil, right farmer, right crop, right seeds (no GMOs), right farming, rightly preserving and right processing are the dynamics with which 24 mantra functions and at every step Organic as an attribute and Quintessential quality is the ultimate goal.
It’s been a little over two decades since its inception and the company works close to 40,000 farmers covering almost 2,00,000 acres of agricultural land across 15 states in the country. The company is also committed to helping farmers create a land that will help them grow pure food, create sustainable livelihood for them, support integrity in transactions and provide better returns to them plus also get them farm certified.
Having understood the nuances of the entire organic farming, I was given an option to try out any of the organic products from over 200 choices to practically identify its benefits. The product range included Cereals, Dals, flours, Spices, spice powders, culinary pastes, masala mixes, oils, millets, juices, snacks and cookies….everything from breakfast to dinner you name it and they had it all. I picked up few staples & cereals that would suffice for 3 – 4 days from the 24 Mantra owned farm shop located on Rd # 5, Banjarahills. The intent was to identify the difference between organic and commercially available products.
On Day 1 started with the Organic Ragi flakes for breakfast with chilled milk and to make it slightly interesting added chopped figs that I sourced from the local market plus a tetra pack of Organic Apple Juice comprised my breakfast. Coming from a half kannadiga household, I was used to having ragi for breakfast and the ragi flakes was a welcome change to my routine. The apple juice tasted a little sour which I assume is because it’s 100% natural and no preservatives in it.
Lunch was a simple affair with chapati’s made using Organic Whole Wheat Atta. The wheat flour is made in the old chakki style to make sure it’s fresh and nutritious. Evening snacker was Whole Grain Organic Cookies and Organic Green Tea that was rich in flavonoids. Cookies were perfect for my liking and instead of opting for a regular warm green tea, I decided to experiment and have a chilled down version of it. With a touch of lemon & a hint of organic honey added to this, the iced green tea was quite refreshing for the humid afternoon.
Organic Foxtail Millet upma with few selected vegetables was my dinner. This routine followed for three days just that one of the days I substituted chapati with Organic Brown Rice pilaf with Cilantro garnish.
Having tried the organic products from 24 mantra for three days, I felt the food tastes a lot better and natural. Although I did not feel any major difference on the health front, I was atleast happy by the fact that my three days of routine included food that was safe from dangerous pesticides & chemicals and that I had nutrient dense food. With a philosophy of No Chemicals, no pesticides and no artificial interventions and lot of benefits associated with I guess I’m convinced to incorporate organic food in my daily routine.
