Estuary Island Resort Experience

Thiruvananthapuram – the capital city of Kerala is one of the many gateways to the God’s Own Country. The city is relatively compact but energetic and most often travelers springboard to the nearby beach resorts of Kovalam and Varkala.

12km south of Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram district is Poovar – an isolated but a spectacular beach destination. Poovar is unspoiled and unexplored, cloaked by the most serene backwaters and golden sand beaches.

Located amidst this unexplored belt is Estuary Island Resort – a beach side heaven where the Lake, River, Sea and Beach meet to form an exotic land of scenic beauty. Thanks to the management at Mystikal Holidays  and Estuary Island Resort, I was happy to be invited for a 2D/1N stay at this natural wonder.

Estuary Island Resort is a prestigious venture of the erstwhile Thomas Hotels and Resorts who have carved a niche for themselves by offering the best of Kerala to all travelers. After a 45 minute drive from Thiruvananthapuram, reached Estuary Island Resort around 1:00 PM.

I got dropped off by the cab at a boat jetty from where a boat was headed to Estuary Island. Unlike other hotels, this drive on the boat to the reception area was indeed special. On the way,  I could spot some rare cormorants sun themselves and even the kingfishers waiting patiently.

Once at the resort, was welcomed by Mr Soby –Resort Manager who made sure the check-in process was hassle free. As the check-in formalities were being completed, a glass of refreshing lemon juice as welcome drink was quite refreshing.

Estuary View was the category of room on offer. With an exotic view of the sea and a private balcony, the room was perched on the edge of an estuary, between the pristine beauty of a natural wonder. The room was serene with tropical décor featuring all the modern amenities.

After freshening up a bit, Lunch was arranged at Ripples – an informally designed open space floating restaurant which had a class of its own. Ripples lays emphasis on the fresh catch and locally sourced ingredients.

Chef Kunal was more than happy to serve their signature sea food platter and traditional Kerala fish curry with rice. The sea food platter comprised of Calamari, squids and Pearlspot marinated & then grilled with traditional Kerala spices. Each of these dishes were top notch.

Post lunch, Mr Soby took me on a tour of the Resort. Estuary Island has 85 rooms dived into the Estuary Premium, the Cottage and the Estuary Garden categories.  They also promote Medical Tourism offering customized packages only on Ayurveda.

Post property tour, it was time for some serious pampering. I had an Abhiyangam full body massage and steam arranged at Ayurveda Vaidyasala. The skillful synthesis between age old therapies and modern spa technology was quite evident. Special mention about Dr JensonAyurveda doctor and Lawrencemasseur therapist who made sure I had a detoxifying and a relaxing treatment.

After this, it was time for high tea by the lake and post which was a boat ride. Absolutely enjoyed the boat ride experience of visiting the golden sand beach, mangrove forest and back water canals plus relishing the freshest of coconut water amidst the lush greenery was a wonderful experience.

Dinner was arranged at the Deck Dining section of Ripples. Coconut & pineapple based mocktail, Dosai, Kerala Parotta with Beef curry, Kerala Biryani and Elaneer Payasam was on offer. Each of these dishes were lipsmacking and absolutely brilliant. Chef Kunal definitely deserves praise for maintaining such standards of quality.  Vishnu – the restaurant supervisor made sure that the each and every minute detail at Ripples was taken care off.

A raised gazebo with the setting sun in the horizon, the tides rising and fishermen sailing past coupled with some delicious Kerala food was a meal that I would definitely treasure for a long time.

Day 2 began with a morning walk along the waterfront walkways through coconut grooves for a sunrise view. The pleasant sound of sea breeze and the magnificent view of the sunrise was such that it would make one forget the busy lifestyle.

Post this was a morning cup of tea at the balcony after which it was time for an early check out to catch a return flight to Hyderabad.

Needless to say, my stay at Estuary Island Resort was Awesome !

Special thanks to Mr Soby –the resort manager who inspite of 100% occupancy at the resort made sure that each and every thing was taken care off such that I had a memorable stay at Estuary Island.

Thumbs up for this one !
