My memories of appam’s start with the softest and fluffiest appam and stew that my Kerala neighbors used to make for breakfast. Since then, this quintessential breakfast is rooted so much so that I long for an opportunity to dig into it with sweetened coconut milk. Was happy to have been invited for the preview of Festival of Appealing Appams at Spice Junxion – a specialty restaurant at Taj Deccan offering a contemporary mix of South Indian and Indian coastal cuisine.
The promotion curated around a single dish – Appam gets a flavorful upgrade to unique versions such as spinach, carrot, beetroot, oats, eggs, etc. The festival offers five Veg and five non-veg variations where each is plated with a set of 2 appams along with a different curry that is paired based on the flavor and a bowl of coconut milk.
Started off with Palappam – which is often served during the weddings in Kerala. This was served with Meen Moilee – a Kerala style fish in coconut curry, flavored with green chili, curry leaves and turmeric. The combination was terrific and a perfect side for Palappam.
Next up was Chettinad flavored Beetroot Appam with its visually appealing pink. The subtle flavors of beetroot perfectly balanced the fiery Mangalorean Chicken curry. A gorgeous and delicious wholesome dish which was one my favorite of the lot.
Egg hoppers or the Mutta Appam that followed next was served with spicy minced meat and was a definite winner and so was the Nei Appam served with the all-time favorite bhuna gosht. There was also Keerai Appam that was served with the oriental touch Asian spiced prawns.
From the vegetarian options Five spice Oats Appam served with mushroom gassi was the favorite of the lot and the Five spice Oats Appam served with chilli paneer. Gothambu Appam and Simamulanki Appam were some of the unusual flavors on offer.
If you are one who is open to try different combinations and open to possibilities, the Festival of Appealing Appams is just for you. The promotion is on until June 26th for both Lunch and Dinner and priced at Rs 500 for Non-veg and Rs 450 for Veg respectively.
Thumbs up for this one !
