We’ve all associated Brandy as the great unsung hero in each of the bar’s lineup that is seldom ordered. Brandy in itself is an incredible stuff and continues to attract bartenders which has been part of many classic cocktails. Surprisingly the popular ones available in the market aren’t really brandy but in fact a neutral spirit based beverage while true brandy is distilled from wines. Changing this notion comes Janus – India’s first 100% premium Grape Brandy which perhaps is India’s answer to the French Cognac.
Launched by the vintners of India’s largest wine company – Sula Vineyards, this is perhaps the first time Sula had forayed into the non-wine alcoholic drink segment. Janus is derived from the ancient Roman deity with two faces. Janus symbolizes the brilliant French cognac making heritage and the proficiency of Sula in selecting the best Indian grapes.
French Master Blender Yonael Bernard has developed a unique recipe that guarantees exceptional smoothness and character in every drop. Janus is aged in small French oak barrels imparting a smooth and distinctive taste, exceptional aroma and a complex character of a cognac – style brandy with a long finish.
Was happy to have been invited for the exclusive Hyderabad launch of Janus where I had the opportunity to be one of the first to get its taste. Was put through a blind tasting alongside two blended whiskies to understand the taste, flavor and nuances that Janus offered in comparison to whiskies. The smell of lemon zest, figs & apples was abundantly noticeable while on the palate it starts with a fruity texture and then with a sharp finish of pepper & ginger with a touch of sweet cinnamon spice.
Tried my hands on experimenting Janus with old fashioned on the rocks, with ginger ale and with cranberry juice and must say that I don’t see it drinking neat but it definitely makes a great base for some delicious cocktails.
