SodaBottleOpenerWala – with all its Idiosyncrasies is credited with bringing forth the dying legacy of the Irani Café. With its bustling, cluttered and quirky theme, SBOW serves parsi cuisine and some of the popular food gems from the streets of Bombay and old world clubs. Some of the dishes like Berry Pulao, Chicken farcha, Muhroom on Khari, Bhendi Bazaar Sheekh Parantha and Eggs Kejriwal have been my personal favorites.
Going a step further, SBOW has introduced a new menu with a variety of choices for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. A new set of dishes has been added around Bar snacks, Mains & Combos, Bakery & Desserts plus also daily specials too.
Was happy to see some of the favorite Bombay staples like the Boiled Egg Sandwich, Bhuna Chicken Sandwich, and the Raasta Sandwich – the everyday grab and go fuel of a typical Bombayite. Then there was simple Chicken Cutlis Pav and the sumptuous Vada Pav – your fix of the typical Bombay Bun.
One of the major attractions of the new menu is the introduction of salads. Shirazi Salad was my favorite of the lot. With honey-lemon-pomegranate molasses over bell peppers and broccoli, this was inspired by the Iranian city of Shiraz and was just too good. The Cheese Cherry Pineapple Salad with blue cheese dressing certainly adds in a touch of nostalgia. Each of the salads come in veg & non-veg variants.
A Bombay street food is incomplete without Bhel – the quintessential street food. The Crispy Corn Bhel or Sea Food Bhel on offer are reminiscent of your usual chowpatty visits.
The daily specials offers a different quirk a day ie; different flavors to each of the 7 days. On Monday’s is the simple Dhan Daar Patio – a classic home food of the Parsis. Tuesdays one could relish the Paneer wrapped in Parsi Style Green Chutney. Wednesdays is the Chicken Sanju Baba – a dish from Noor Mohammadi whose recipe was supposedly given to them by actor Sanjay Dutt himself. On Thursday’s it’s the delicious Bombli Fry while Fridays is the unique parsi styled curry of Gos No Saas. Saturdays is a goan day with delicious Goan Prawn Curry and Sundays is the parsi delicacy of Masoor ma gos where mutton on the bone is cooked with whole Masoor.
SodaBottleOpenerWala firmly believes in ending each meal on a sweet note. Coconut Tart, Apple-Pear-Plum Pie that is served with custard, new brownie flavors of Rum & Red Velvet are some of the inclusions of the new menu. Another interesting offering on the revamped menu is a selection of cupcakes with unusual flavors like Wheatgrass, Citrus, Multigrain & Organic Honey. Salted Caramel Crumb and Double Chocolate Chip were other flavors on offer.
Each of the dishes on the new menu tells a story of the Bombay street food and its constant evolution to accommodate the food preferences of new settlers. Head to SBOW now to relish these specialties that sparkle the streets of Bombay.
Thumbs up for this one.
