You know Christmas season is just round the corner when you get an invite for the Traditional Cake Mixing Ceremony. Was happy to have been invited by The Westin Mindspace, Hyderabad – third time in a row. The tradition of Cake Mixing marks the beginning of the festive season of Christmas and is supposedly considered to be an usher for good things and happiness.
An interesting array of fruits, including raisins, glazed red cherries, orange peel, tutti frutti, black currants, dates, figs, dried apricots, prunes and nuts like walnuts, cashew, almond flakes and pistachio were filled in huge steel trays. All of us dressed in typical Chefs attire with hats, apron and gloves set to work of mixing the fruits first and then later emptied the bottles of wine, rum and whiskey. Within no time, the lawn at The Westin Mindspace was filled with the aroma of brandy, rum, spices, fruits and nuts which were quite intoxicating and yet promising the vibrant taste of the cake that would mature beautifully just in time for Christmas.
Close to 80 kg of dried fruits and 40 liters of alcohol was used in what would be a 250 kg giant cake for Christmas. On the other side, a team of chef’s helped the kids with competitions such as muffin decoration, keeping them thoroughly engaged. The event was held in support of Cheers Foundation– An established children’s home looking after the accommodation and vocational training of underprivileged children.
With loads of fun and loads of work – all amidst great cheer and fervor, the evening concluded with High Tea that included some delicious snacks and pastries along with their popular gelatos in fresh waffle cones.
It was nice to see the entire staff of The Westin Mindspace all geared up to bring in the festive mood of Christmas. Cant wait to get my hands on the Christmas Cake !
